If you haven’t heard of Nina Simone, now you have. I don’t know how to describe her songs without gushing; suffice it to say she’s as amazing as she was prolific. The songs in their original recordings are powerful stories and poems of her time, testimonies of deep love, deep hurt, deep anger and deep emotion.
What I’ve compiled today is a list of seven (7) remixes of some of her well-known songs. There are plenty of excellent songs sampled from her body of work, especially in hip-hop (‘sup Kanye West). And, of course, the line between sample and remix gets pretty thin, but we can always pick that apart later. For now, enjoy a few remixed/sampled Nina Simone songs.

So the tone of this here blog is definitely going to change. The job search is, uh… long. Lots of checking my email every hour; lots of not letting my phone outta sight; lots of printing out my resume. I’ve spent a lot of time wondering why in the world I didn’t start this sooner and then I remember that living in Santa Cruz and looking for work in “the Los Angeles area” wasn’t easy to coordinate. Speaking of Santa Cruz…

I’ve concluded that being “liberal” doesn’t cut it. “Liberal” people don’t give you weird looks when you enter a computer science classroom. “Liberal” people don’t shut down a party when all the colored people roll through. “Liberal” doesn’t mean pointing out the color of your skin when you’re looking for housing. “Liberal” doesn’t mean sticking a bunch of witty bumper stickers on your 16-foot SUV. “Liberal” doesn’t account for the Pink Guy or the Balloon Man or the myriad of street performers on Pacific Ave. That’s just weird. And, you know what? That’s okay.

Dear Friends [Please forward to other students, faculty, and allies you know],
The State Labor Board has ordered AFSCME back to the bargaining table because University of California administration claims they have more to offer. Therefore the STRIKE IS POSTPONED!
UC administration has shown that they are extremely worried about the 2-day strike called by patient care and service workers. While a 97% statewide worker vote to strike as well as continued worker/student/faculty/staff/community unity has moved UC – this fight is far from over. We see this attempt to suppress workers’ right to strike as a calculated move by the UC to divide workers and students. After 10 months of organizing, we believe the UC is scared of our strength in numbers, and wants to push the strike into the summer, as well as divide students from workers, and workers from other workers.
There will be a statewide day of action on June 4/5/6 including at the Inauguration on Friday, June 6th. We will be sending the message to UC executives that coming back to the bargaining table with promises of good faith negotiations is not enough. They will not have peace until they address the serious problems with recruitment and retention of patient care staff and poverty wages of service workers.
Thank you for your continued solidarity!
Action details after the jump.
